It takes a teacher: Mr. Denman

Eagle Point, Ore.– The final teacher in our NBC5 News at Sunrise series honoring special teachers in Southern Oregon, is Marvin Denman.  Denman was nominated by his student, Daniel Ledesma.

“Mr. Denman’s personality is a great one,” says Ledesma.  “He’s just a great guy.”

Ledsema is a 7th grader at Eagle Point Middle School.  He’s also just one of over 130 students that passes through Marvin Denman’s classroom door each school day.  While Ledesma enjoys many of his classes, he says learning about social studies from Mr. Denman is an honor.

“It’s like a once in a lifetime opportunity, that’s what I think,” Ledesma beams.

A 19 year teaching veteran, Denman says he was drawn to the profession because of inspiring teachers he had.

“At every level I had really good teachers and so I wanted to give back in that area,” Denman explains.  “Matter of fact, my first teaching job was at my old junior high school.”

A Seattle native, Denman is in his first year of teaching at the Eagle Point Middle School.  Beyond keeping his students up to date on the latest world news, “They do care about what goes on around the world and they listen,” he says he most enjoys making the classroom and fun and welcoming place.

“Making them laugh, helping them to learn, and helping them to feel comfortable.” Denman says.  “Makes it easy to get up in the morning and come out to Eagle Point.  I am proud to be a part of this school district and work with these kids.”
