Jackson County repeals local marijuana tax

10.25 POT TAX REPEALMedford, Ore. — Jackson County’s tax on medical and recreational marijuana is no more. Commissioners voted today to repeal the ordinance approved by voters earlier this year.

Jackson County commissioner Doug Breidenthal says the repeal was necessary after Governor Kate Brown signed House Bill 3400 which placed it’s own guidelines for taxing marijuana on the state and local level.

Those guidelines overwrote the local tax approved by 63% of Jackson County voters.

Even so, Breidenthal says the short-lived local tax did have an impact.

“Jackson County is the only county in the state that took the time to get ahead of this and put something like this in place, so as a result of the work we did in Jackson County the entire state is receiving a benefit,” said Breidenthal.

House bill 3400 does allow up to a 3% local sales tax, which has to be approved by county voters during the next general election.

A second reading of the repeal is scheduled for November 12th.
