Joco sheriff weighs in on gun rights after shooting

Grants Pass, Ore., — Oregon State Police say they’re still collecting evidence from the shooting on Wilderville Lane on Monday.

So far, no one has been arrested.

The homeowner involved in the case says the shooting happened when Rudy Perez was trying to break into his home Sunday afternoon.

Sheriff Dave Daniel says the Josephine County Sheriff’s  Office definitely supports the second amendment right to bear arms, but that doesn’t mean not to proceed with caution.

Sheriff Daniel says people in Oregon have the right to defend themselves with a weapon if they feel they are in serious danger of being injured or killed.

And while he wants people to defend themselves, Sheriff Daniel says calling 911 should always be the first thing you do.

“People just need to proceed with caution and think about what they’re doing before they take an action that could potentially change the course of their lives.”

As of February there are almost 7,000 Josephine County residents with concealed weapon permits and almost 15,000 in Jackson County.

California is similar to Oregon.

While it doesn’t have a stand-your-ground law, you are allowed to use deadly force in your home if you’re in danger.
