14-year-old girl killed by log on Bandon beach

Bandon, Ore  — A 14-year-old Eugene girl has died, after a log she was playing on rolled on top of her.

The accident happened at South Jetty Park Beach in Bandon yesterday afternoon.

Oregon State Police say the girl was playing on a log in the heavy receding tide when it rolled on top of her.

Witnesses were able to roll the log off of her after several tries, and a Bandon Police Officer began CPR.

The girl was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Now OSP is urging the public to educate children on all possible dangers before heading to the beach.

“Talk to the kids before you go about the different dangers. Read through all the safety stuff with the kids. For instance, it talks about sneaker waves. We hear about that occurring every so often and I know there’s signs at these state parks we go and see when I’m there, but yet we still have accidents,” Sergeant Kyle Hove said.

Sergeant Hove says safety tips can be found on the Oregon Parks website: https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/PARKS/pages/beach_tips.aspx
