A Cookie Crisis

Local Girl Scouts rely on their annual cookie sales to fund events and camp. But this year, leaders say they may have bitten off more than they can chew.

They’re struggling to make sales. “We really feel the economy has taken a factor in it and we’re really struggling this year,” says Verna Edgerton.

Edgerton is the sales specialist for the Southern Oregon Girl Scouts. She says this year they’ve set the biggest sales goal ever.

Edgerton explains, “It’s our 100th anniversary this year so we went with 1912, 2012 – lets sell 2.012 million boxes of cookies to tie it all in together.”

Right now the troops are 100,000 boxes behind and they only have until March 11th to meet their goal.

Edgerton tells us, “Of course if the troops don’t reach their goals that means their troop has to rain in and budget a little tighter. It means we have to trim down some of the events we want to plan for next year. Or curtail them a little bit. Just like everybody does at home when you don’t make the money.”

In an effort to make sales, the 100 year old organization has even gone high tech. Now, with the cookie locater app you can enter your zip code and immediately find the closest cookie booth.

Edgerton says for the next three days local scouts will be trying to sell that 2.012 millionth box by holding true to their law –

courageous and strong -no matter the obstacle.
