Another suspicious fire brings total to eight

Central Point, Ore. — Fire crews and police are on high alert after numerous fires break out near the Bear Creek Greenway.

It’s something that’s becoming all too common for fire investigators. Eight fires have sparked in just nine days between Medford and Central Point. Officials said they’re intentionally set.

The latest sparked Monday night behind near behind the Jackson County Expo parking lot in Central Point.

“Someone brought the ignition source to the area and then took it away from there,” District Three Fire Marshal Mark Northrop said.

It burned half an acre, and Northrop said could be linked to the other seven.

“The similarities are definitely location. They’re all on the greenway or just off the greenway in areas frequented by transient population, and they all seem to be started in the same type of vegetation,” he said.

Medford Fire and District Three are working together to find out who could be responsible. Medford Police arrested Manoah Hall and Debra Johns in separate arson cases in 2014, but more than a dozen remain unsolved.

Fire officials with Medford Fire said they know one person is behind at least three of the fires. Medford Police, Central Point Police, and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office are each conducting criminal investigations into the cases.
