Ashland PD: Bike thefts down following start of “bike bait” program

Ashland, Ore. — Police in Ashland say bike thefts are down following the implementation of the “bait bike” program.

In the first three months of 2013 there were 26 reports of stolen bikes.

Ashland resident Patrick McGuire was one of those who had to report a bike theft in progress “Here were some characters in the middle of the night that tried to pilfer, I was glad I was able to thwart it…I called the police and they were great. They came from both directions.”

Following that incident, the “bait bike” program was implemented in October of 2013.

Police place bikes with electronic tracking devices throughout the city which are used to track down thieves.

Police say now bike thefts are down: instead of 26 thefts from January to March, like 2013, this year they only had 18 reports.
