‘Chemical destructive device’ found at Klamath County Jail

Klamath Falls, Ore. – Tense moments as a ‘chemical destructive device’ is found at the Klamath County Jail.

A small explosion ended a 2-hour drama that began around noon at the Klamath County Jail, when a suspicious device was found near the entrance.

‘The second door, somebody had leaned this chemical destructive device up against it.” Stated Klamath County Sheriff Frank Skrah.

About 100 people from parole and probation, and the sheriff’s office were evacuated as a precaution.

The Oregon State Police Bomb Squad neutralized the device just before two.

Sheriff Skrah won’t go into too much detail about the nature of the device…

“I can’t go into that. But it’s confirmed by O.S.P. as a chemical destructive device.”

Skrah adds that a full investigation is now underway…

“We have video surveillance on the outside of the building, so we’re going to see what we can find there, and then going to start looking at jail logs to see who has visited who.”

While there have been bomb threats to the jail before, this is the first time a device has actually been placed.

“I see this stuff in Los Angeles when I was down there all the time.” Noted Sheriff Skrah. “You don’t expect this kind of stuff here in Klamath Falls.”

The area was re-opened about a half hour after the device was rendered safe.

Those with any information are asked to contact the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office.
