More than 9 million college students are paying the price for their financial aid money, even here in the Rogue Valley.
More than 900 colleges are using payment cards, such as Higher One to distribute financial aid to students.
Officials say programs like Higher One lets universities distribute financial aid to students for free, dropping the cost of printing and mailing checks.
Meanwhile, students pay for fees that come with the card.
A few fees charged to students who have higher one account include:
$50 if an account is overdrawn for more than 45 days.
$10 per month if the student stops using his account for six months.
$29 to $38 for overdrawing an account with a recurring bill payment.
50 cents to use a pin number instead of a signature system at a retail store.
Locally, Ashland’s own Southern Oregon University uses the Higher One cards for financial aid distribution, as well as a student ID card.
The Oregon Institute of technology in Klamath Falls also uses that card.
