Council votes to ban retail sales of recreational marijuana

Klamath Falls, Ore. – A ordinance to ban retail sales of recreational marijuana got a first reading before the Klamath Falls City Council Tuesday night.

Councilman Bud Hart noted that a ban in Klamath Falls would only apply to recreational marijuana…

“Sales of medical marijuana are authorized in the city of Klamath Falls.  All of the issues before us tonight are regarding recreational marijuana.”

Dr. Richard Johnson says he supports a ban due to health concerns…

“Marijuana has 50% more carcinogens than cigarettes – meaning, 50% more toxins that will cause cancer.”

But Melissa Ferroggiaro of ‘Laughing Lotus Farms’ claims it’s not a health issue…

“You can drink yourself to death overnight with alcohol.  You can smoke yourself to death your whole entire life with cigarettes.  You guys have no problems taking tax money for killing our citizens.”

Three people spoke in favor of the ban, seven spoke in opposition.

At the end of public testimony, Council voted to ban recreational sales by a vote of 4 to 1.

The city will hold a second and final hearing on the ban September 21st.

If Council passes the proposed ordinance for a ban, recreational sales through the 2 medical marijuana dispensaries in Klamath Falls will not be allowed.
