Department of Fish and Wildlife Vote to Ban Gillnets on the Columbia River

The vote is in, steps have been taken to ban gillnets from the main part of the Columbia river.

On Friday the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission voted 4-2 to get rid of gillnets.

The proposal was on the November ballot, but did not pass.

It’s expected the controversial decision will get pushback from the commercial fishing industry.

Those opposed to gillnets say the practice is not environmentally friendly.

While supporters say banning gillnets will have a negative impact on the culinary tourism industry.
