Despite lower amount of new cases, health officials warn the pandemic isn’t ending soon

MEDFORD, Ore. — While Jackson County Public Health continues to report little to no new cases, health officer Dr. Jim Shames says we’re still at the beginning of this pandemic.

Dr. Shames says the opening of public places would need to be a slow process in accordance with the governor’s guidelines.

He adds that although smaller counties in Oregon are doing a bit better, the larger areas are still struggling.

“We’re gonna have to keep using these social strategies to control the virus, it is light at the end of the tunnel, but I don’t think we’re weeks or a few months from whipping this thing,” said Dr. Shames.

He says going forward, it might be a good idea to keep high risk people isolated and let younger, healthier individuals ease back into a normal routine.
