Dog rescued in Josephine County

Galice, Ore. – Firefighters helped rescue an elderly dog that tumbled down a cliff in an isolated part of Josephine County.

According to firefighters, on Thursday evening a woman was walking her elderly lab-mix, named Travis, on a main trail when the dog slipped off the trail and tumbled down an estimated 60-foot cliff.

Firefighters said the woman hiked out and drove to her house to call 911.

A rescue team hiked in to the remote location around 20 miles west of Merlin with rescue equipment. Firefighters descended down to Travis, put him in a harness and lifted him to the trail.

Travis did not appear to be seriously injured, but his owners planned to take him to the vet in the morning.

RMFD said, “It serves as a reminder to those who use the Rogue River Trail that the area is very remote and without cell service. In emergencies, help may be delayed.”
