Eagle Point School District Discusses Guns on Campus

The Eagle Point School District is considering a proposal that would allow teachers and staff members to carry weapons on campus.

Wednesdaynight, the districts ‘weapons safety committee’ gathered for the first time to discuss the possibility.

Jim Mannenbach has been on the Eagle Point School Board for 4 years.

He spoke with us, not as member of the board but rather a concerned community citizen, regarding the districts consideration of allowing school staff to carry weapons on campus.

While it’s unclear which direction the committee will go, it is the first step in potentially allowing guns on campus.

The idea behind teachers carrying weapons on campus stems from the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting last December.

The district did not come to any conclusions Wednesday and plan to have another meeting at a later date.

We did speak with members of the committee on both sides of the fence. They did not want to speak on camera but say that they felt like the meeting was a success in the fact that they were able to have a civil conversation and it gave them much to think about.
