Family safe after becoming stranded on rural road

Josephine County, Ore. – On Wednesday morning, Deputies responded to a report of a family stuck in the snow on Happy Camp Road just past the Oregon-California border in Josephine County.

According to the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, a husband and wife along with their child and family dog were driving to Northern California from the Portland area when their GPS directed them to use Happy Camp Road to reach their destination. They quickly found themselves stuck in the snow without cell phone coverage.

Deputies said the family stayed in their vehicle overnight. The husband hiked to an area where he could get a cell phone signal and called for help.

Search and rescue personnel helped the family get turned around and return to the highway so they could continue their journey on maintained roads.

The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind travelers to plan their route in advance and be aware of road conditions. Deputies add many GPS systems can steer people in the wrong direction where winter travel conditions can be poor.
