Federal charges on local cases

Medford, Ore., — A follow up to a story NBC5 first told you about in January.

Troy Wyatt is facing federal charges, in connection with a butane hash oil explosion.

Those charges include manufacturing hash oil and endangering human life while manufacturing a controlled substance.

Wyatt’s garage burned January 2nd.

It may become more common, to see federal charges in cases like this.
that’s because the penalties are higher.

Especially when a case involves marijuana or any of its products, which are illegal on the federal level.

“You have people who are putting their neighbors in danger, people in the household in danger, the property itself in danger and the Oregon statute really didnt have much of a penalty.” says Jackson County District Attorney Beth Heckert

If federal courts take over a local case, local charges are usually dropped.
