Fire Claims Elderly Woman

Sad news tonight: a 70 year old woman living alone has died after smoke filled her home…firefighters are still sorting out what happened.

70 year old Joyce Esposito lived alone..firefighters found her dead inside her home where a fire broke out.

Around 11:30 this morning, reports came in of a house fire on Mountain View Drive in Central Point. A neighbor tells us, “There was smoke just permeating throughout of the house.”

27 fire fighters responded to the scene from District 3 and Medford. They say instead of finding flames, they found a home filled with smoke.

Don Hickman of the fire department tells us, “It looked like it had been smoldering for quite some time, and when the firefighters made entry there was very little fire.”

Esposito lived in one side of the duplex..the other is empty.Firefighters found her in the living room where they think the fire started. Hickman continues, “We don’t know how but a lot of times if you/re trapped in a home like this you’ll succumb to the smoke before the fire.”

Crews are still investigating the scene to determine the cause of the fire and also the woman’s death.
