Foam fire suppression system tested in new hangar

MEDFORD, Ore. — It may have looked like firefighters were playing in bubbles today, but it was all part of the job.

A fire suppression system designed for jet fuel was installed in Million Air’s new large airplane hanger and had to be tested out.

Foam is used instead of water since jet fuel floats on top of the water and can spread a fire.

“So the foam gets on top of the fire and smothers it, whereas the water streams will move it across the top of the jet fuel,” explained Deputy Fire Marshall Chase Browning with Medford Fire-Rescue.

Once activated, the system can fill the hangar in just a few minutes. The new hangar is large enough to hold 3 Boeing class business jets or half a dozen small ones.
