Gold Hill, Ore.– Monday, four of six city council members turned in a statement of justification in response to a recall petition.
“I decided not to resign because there was no need for it,” said Doug Reischman.
“I was fully committed to not resigning my position,” said Margaret Dials.
Reischman, Dials, Lorraine Parks, and Gus Wolf had until 4:30 p.m. to resign or turn in a letter saying they’d fight for their seats,all four plan to fight.
“The city council has been very responsible in doing what we were elected to do and I’d like to get back to the business of doing that instead of all the hub bub of the recall,” said Dials.
The woman behind the effort to recall the four councilors said that the four did not listen to the publicwhen they lifted a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries in June. Allowing Breeze Botanicals to open it’s doors.
“We weren’t voting on the medical marijuana we were voting on the aspects of zoning so that they could come in here and run their business legally and that’s what the state of Oregon asked us to do so that’s what I feel that we did,” said Reischman.
Councilors standing by their decisionone that’s already generated at least $1,000 for public safety in Gold Hill.
Still, West had enough support to get the recall ball rollingturning in at least 63 signatures per councilor up for a recall.
Councilor Reischman said he knows big decisions are often controversial.
“That’s what happens when you do good things for the community some community people don’t like it and other community people do.”
There’s a recall election set for Monday August 25th. Until then councilors said they’ll go about their routines normally.
