Grants Pass bar fight turns deadly

Grants Pass, Ore. — Police said 39 year-old Britt Bones was wanted on felony charges from Nebraska to Jackson County. Now, he will face murder charges after Saturday’s fight at the Red Rock Lounge.

Police said 25 year-old Michael McCoy died at a Portland hospital Monday after he was stabbed during a bar fight.

“It looked like the knife was stuck in the victim’s head area,” Ward said.

Police said the fight started a little before midnight. Lieutenant Dennis Ward of Grants Pass Department of Public Safety said when officers got there the victim’s injuries were critical and whoever was behind it was nowhere to be found.

“They ended up doing a police k9 track trying to locate the suspect in the case,” Ward said.

After a long search Ward said detectives got tips that led them to Bones, who was hiding in a Selma home.

Bones appeared in court Monday on weapons and attempted murder charges, but that was before the Josephine County District Attorney learned McCoy had died.

“We anticipate that those charges will be changed to murder here shortly,” Ward said.

He also said this isn’t the first time officers have been called out to Red Rock Lounge.

“We have had quite a few problems up there so we have been paying extra attention,” Ward said.

Ward says he hopes extra patrols and help from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission could help with the issues.

Red Rock Lounge would not comment on what happened.

Bones will be indicted in front of a Grand Jury Thursday. For now, he is in Josephine County Jail.
