Holmes eligible for death penalty

Colo. –(NBC News) A jury has found James Holmes guilty of multiple counts of first degree murder and eligible for the death penalty.

Holmes, a 27-year-old former neuroscience student at the University of Colorado-Denver, never denied carrying out the attack on an Aurora, Colorado theater during a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” on July 20, 2012 that left 12 dead and dozens more wounded. His lawyers, however, had attempted to avoid the death penalty using a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Prosectors maintained that while Holmes may have been mentally ill, he was still able to differentiate right from wrong during the time he spent planning and preparing for the attack.
