Impact On Tourism From Smoke

The smoke is finally starting to clear, allowing many to venture out again and enjoy their summer.

But how much of an impact did the smokey conditions have on tourism in southern Oregon

Representativesfrom the Britt and Oregon Shakespeare Festival say the smoke did create financial problems but they were able to work around them.

OSF had to cancel four performances. Cynthia Rider, Executive Director for the festival says it was a loss but attendance has been up this summer.

“We have a great and loyal audiences and so we still had thousands of people come through but some had to re-schedule because of the smoke.”

Rider couldn’t provide a total number of losses because she says people are still getting refunds and exchanging tickets for shows. She says she’s just happy to see clear skies.

The marketing director with the Britt Festival says they also had to move venues for their classical performance three times and ticket sales did go down at around that time.
