Man escapes burning home in West Medford

MEDFORD, Ore. — A West Medford family is without a home, after their house caught on fire early Saturday morning. The resident was sleeping inside when the fire started, and said he’s lucky to be alive.

“I was sleeping on the couch, and I felt like it was pretty warm, walked outside, and turned around and looked back and there was zero visibility,” Ryan Lango said. “There was this much room to actually see, I just put my hoodie on up over my face, went in, got the dog, came back out and took a breath.”

Just after 5:30 AM, fire crews were called to the 1000 block of Cherry street in Medford. When they arrived, the entire front of the house was engulfed in flames. Fire investigators said they’re working to determine what caused the fire.

“At this point, I’m calling it accidental, I don’t believe these people intended to burn their house down,” Samantha Metheny said, a fire investigator with Medford Fire-Rescue.”They’re lucky that no one else was in the house sleeping, they did not have working smoke alarms, and should somebody been asleep in there, they would not have had any warning.”

The Red Cross is providing help to the family.
