Man pleads not guilty in deadly high speed crash

Medford, Ore. — The man accused of leading police on a high speed chase that killed another driver pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday.

Robert Brooks is facing several charges including manslaughter, DUII, and resisting arrest.

Police said the chase when through Medford before Brooks hit and killed Katie Hein at the intersection of Vilas and Table Rock Road in Central Point. It ended when Brooks crashed into the Lil’ Pantry.

Brooks family was in court. They said he was going through a rough time in life, but would never intentionally hurt anyone. They said he’s overwhelmed with grief about the damage he’s done.

Hein’s family started a “gofundme” account. In a post on the site Hein’s son describes her as a woman who loved her family and had just won a long battle with breast cancer. They’ve raised nearly $22,000 in eight days.

Brooks’ pretrial conference is set for August 29th. His bail remains at $1 million.
