Medford man accused of threatening the President in court

Medford, Ore. — A Medford man accused of making a homemade bomb, and threatening President Obama online appeared before a judge for the first time on Monday.

The suspect, John Martin Roos, 61, said nothing, as the judge explained the charge against him. He is being charged with communication of a threat via interstate commerce, which means making a threat online. In court, Roos was appointed an attorney by the judge, before an arraignment date of May 9th was scheduled.

Roos was under investigation for the online threats, when the Medford Police Department and FBI served a search warrant at his apartment at Poplar Village last Thursday. During that search, police say they found a homemade bomb.

Roos remains in Jackson County Jail on that federal charge. The FBI is continuing to lead the investigation, with assistance from the U.S. Secret Service.
