Medford police name victim in Saturday’s shooting

Medford, Ore. –Medford police said a gunman shot and killed 34-year-old Luke Adrian-Heiner Barmes just before 5:00 Saturday evening in West Medford.

Police said two suspects arrived at Barmes home on Iowa Street. While one of them parked the car the gunman went to the backyard with Barmes. That’s when he was fatally shot.

Around 10:00 Saturday night Oregon State Police spotted the suspect vehicle on Interstate 5, and pulled it over near milepost 24. A male and female were detained, but officers determined neither of them were the shooter.

Shortly after, detectives found the gun involved in the shooting on Clark Street. Police said it was tossed aside as the suspects left Barmes’ home.

Police said just before 7:00 Sunday morning the suspected shooter was tracked to the Ashland Hill’s Inn. When officers arrived the man ran, but gave up when he encountered a police canine. The suspect is now in jail on an unrelated outstanding warrant as detectives continue to investigate what exactly happened Saturday evening when gunfire erupted.

This is the fourth shooting that officers have responded to in that area in less than a year. In September police investigated two drive by shootings on Narregan. Those were both gang related. Two week before, gunfire erupted on the corner of Edwards and Niantic.

David Bradford lives in the neighborhood. He said he’s heartbroken by the crime that happened right next door to his home.

“The one neighbor, the guy who lives right next door to him comes out and goes, ‘he’s dead.’ And the ambulance showed up, and the ambulance went away,” Bradford said.

Police said the shooting was not gang related. They believe Barmes and the suspect knew each other.
