Medford, Ore. — Officers are cracking down on a traffic violation many people might not be aware of.
At the intersection of Table Rock and Mace Roads, Medford Police conducted extra enforcement, looking for drivers who aren’t obeying non-visible crosswalk laws.
According to those laws, vehicles are required to stop before an intersection if a pedestrian is clearly trying to cross.
Police employees and volunteers from a nearby animal shelter took turns crossing the street to find drivers unaware of the rules.
“Every intersection where the roads intersect, there’s an implied crosswalk, just because there’s not paint on the ground doesn’t mean that’s not a crosswalk for pedestrians,” said Medford Police Sergeant Don Lane.
Medford Police say they were mostly giving warnings – not citations – but a fine for not obeying crosswalk laws can cost you more than $200.
Medford Police released their results.
During this operation, the following enforcement action was taken:
3 – citations issued for Failure to Stop and Remain Stopped for a Pedestrian in a Crosswalk
32 – warnings issued for Failure to Stop and Remain Stopped for a Pedestrian in a Crosswalk
2 – citations issued for Operating a vehicle while using a cell phone
1 – warning issued for Operating a Vehicle while using a cell phone
2 – citations for Failure to use Seatbelt
1 – warning issued for Failure to use Seatbelt
1 – citation for No Operator’s License
2 – citations for Driving While Suspended
2 – citations for Driving Uninsured
2 – citations for Speeding
3 – citations/warnings for other violations
