Medford Police say stats don’t tell the whole story

Medford, Ore. – The FBI released Oregon’s crime statistics from 2014, putting Medford at number four for the most property crimes in the state. However, Medford Police Chief Tim George says the numbers don’t tell the whole story.

Chief George says there are several factors that influence those numbers, such as the amount of officers the department has, or the amount of reports they take.

“There are a lot of variables that come into play, some jurisdictions may not be taking reports on certain offenses based on resources,” Chief George said. “We’re fortunate we have adequate resources here and we take a report when there’s a crime.”

The statistics come from crime codes that the department sends to the state, which in turn get sent to the FBI. Medford Police say since the beginning of 2015, violent crimes have gone down by two percent, and all other crimes have decreased by 10 percent.
