Medford School District looks at safety protocol after student crash

Medford, Ore. – The Medford School District is reviewing their safety protocol and policies, after two North Medford High School students were involved in a car crash on Tuesday morning, during the lunch hour. One student was driving on Roberts road near North Keene Way drive, when police say he struck another student in the crosswalk.

“He hit the front of the vehicle, went up onto the windshield, and actually cracked the windshield of the vehicle, before he fell off and went to the ground,” Officer Jim Swanson said. “It appears that if he has injuries, they’re going to be minor injuries, he was up walking and talking.”

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital as a precaution. The driver of the car was cited for failing to stop for a pedestrian in the crosswalk. Medford School District officials say they’re looking at their safety policy, and this specific incident will be reviewed by a board.

“Safety is a conversation that we continue to have at the Medford School District, and it helps to partner with our families and have those conversations at home as well.”

The Medford School District is looking at a number of options, including the possibility of a closed campus during lunch.
