Heavy rain also means lots of snow for surrounding mountains — causing lots of excitement for one local business.
After the worst season in 20 years, Mount Ashland Ski Resort says it’s hoping the forecasted wet weather could mean an early start to the ski season.
Resort officials say their preparing for an open as early as next Wednesday.
“An early open is just gravy for us. You have to keep in a mind a ski resort only makes it’s revenue 4 and a half months out of the year. If we could make that 5 months that would be even better,” says General Manager Kim Clark.
Clark says it’s more likely they’ll start early season right after Thanksgiving – still more than two weeks ahead of schedule.
Currently the mountain has 6 inches of snow at the top. they need another 20 to 25 inches of good, wet snow to open early.
Meteorologists say that is possible by the end of next week.
Extra information: the resort employs 140 people, which Clark says helps stimulate Ashland’s winter economy.
