Move to label GMO food products failed

Ore. — Measure 92 came down to the wire but the Oregonian called it today and the move to label GMO food products failed.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, the Secretary of State’s office showed the measure failing by only 13,000 votes, which is a percentage point in difference.

Some 1.2 million Oregonians voted on Measure 92 and even though it did not pass supporters of labeling are calling the effort a success.

“I think the fact that we had 150,000+ Oregonians show up with signatures to place this on the ballot is a clear sign that this is important to citizens to know what’s in their food,” said Measure 92 supporter, Chris Hardy.

The measure attracted a record amount of money as big companies on both sides battled to sway voters. By election day, the No on 92 group spent more than $20 million and Yes on 92 had spent $7 million.

Supporters say they plan to keep the momentum going and will continue to push for more transparency on food labels.
