New wave of layoffs at Erickson

Central Point, Ore. — Local workers are without jobs after another round of layoffs at Erickson Aircrane.

An employee at the operations center in Central Point said 50 to 60 employees in Southern Oregon were laid off today.

Erickson’s Director of Marketing Susan Bladholm said she could not confirm that number but said Erickson plans to cut about 100 positions globally this quarter.

She said cuts started at the top, but they’ll be made across the board.

“We’ve had to take a look at what our income is and what our cost is to run the business and have determined, gosh, we got to make sure we are able to be profitable,” she said. “I mean we can’t keep operating on a loss.”

Southern Oregon makes up a large portion of Erickson’s global operation with 300 of 750 total employees.

The company’s financial problems aren’t a surprise to workers. According to their second quarter results, revenue was down more than $16 million compared to last year. Plans were also announced to reduce administrative and support costs.

Bladholm said Erickson is providing assistance for those who were laid off including counseling and help with resumes. She also said all the employees should receive severance packages based on the time they put in with the company.
