Rogue River parents are proposing a second charter school for Oregon students … except with a twist: this one’s entirely online.
Tonight, the school district board held a public hearing to discuss the proposal. At the meeting, proponents of an online charter school feel it could reach out to students for whom traditional education just doesn’t work.
Furthermore, as an added incentive for the district, Rogue River High could blend their in-class studies with the online
school.
It’s being called the way of the future. “I wish they had something like that when I was a kid,” says Jason Griffin.
The Rogue River parent has two children in the district and thinks a proposed online charter high school makes sense. “My kids are growing up with computers, it will probably be the norm when they get to high school.”
If approved the charter school expects it would be mostly for kids who have health concerns, job schedules, or children and can’t attend during normal school hours. However, students who attend the brick and mortar Rogue River High could take some of the online classes too… Griffin continues, “Sometimes their classes get full, it be nice to pick it up online.”
The charter would be in partnership with the ignite education group, an Oregon based company that uses Oregon certified teachers.
We just spoke to the superintendent and he said one down side he sees is less socialization for entirely online students. At this point, it is uncertain how this addition would financially impact the district.
