Opening of Britt Festival Brings Big Business To Jacksonville

It’s that time of year when the streets of Jacksonville get busier, the nights get a little louder and the local merchants see a lot more green.

Tonight kicked off the first concert of the Britt Festival’s 2012 season, the northwest’s oldest outdoor music and performing arts festival.

Bay area alternative rock band Primus was tonight’s headlining act.

Local restaurants like Bella Union experienced a boost in business thanks to this weekend’s taste of summer. Now that the concert season is underway, whether it’s a run on wine and bread at the local grocery store or an influx of business before or after the evening concert, merchants say Britt-related business is a welcome addition to their bottom line.

Tom Bates, of Bella Union says “About a half an hour before the concert actually starts, the place empties but the 2 hours before, just crazy. Just everybody running really fast trying to get everybody accommodated so they can go to the show.”

Bates says the restaurant is also fully staffed for the post-show crowd, which is also pretty significant.

Next up, Melissa Ethridge takes the Britt stage on Friday.
