Oregon Senate approves measure to double time limit for prosectuing rape cases

Salem, Ore. –A senate committee has approved a measure extending Oregon’s state of limitations on certain sexual assault crimes to 12 years. That’s double from the current limitations of six years.

The judiciary committee passed the bill four to zero. Sexual assault victims and victim support groups lobbied for an amendment extending the statute to at least 20 years.

The new statute would apply to rape, sodomy, unlawful sexual penetration and sexual abuse all in the first degree. The proposal now goes to the senate.
