Planned Study Will Determine If Area Dams Could Withstand The Big One

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plan to study Lost Creek dam in Trail, and whether or not it’s capable of withstanding a catastrophic earthquake.

The Rogue Rivers largest reservoir is just one of several Pacific Northwest dams set for seismic safety studies in the coming months.

Geologists say an earthquake like the 9.0 magnitude quake off of the Japan coast in 2011 could hit off the Oregon and Washington coast along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which usually happens every 500 years.

The last one was in the 1700’s.
