Police: Shooting, arson at same residence within hours of each other

Grants Pass, Ore. — An arson investigation is now underway at an already active crime scene in Grants Pass, where police say a man was shot this morning. Oregon State Police say when their investigators started to leave the area, that’s when the fire started.

“You don’t typically investigate a shooting at a residence, and then when you’re trying to leave, end up coming back to the residence for a fire that’s engulfing the residence,” Lieutenant Jeff Fitzgerald said.

Troopers first responded to the residence on the 4000 block of Redwood Highway around 6:45 on Thursday morning.

“We found a male subject suffering from a gunshot wound,” Lt. Fitzgerald said.

A neighbor said he’s seen the victim in the area before, and his neighbor has been having trouble with the man.

Police say he was taken to Three Rivers Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. It was when police began leaving the crime scene, that they say the house went up in flames.

“We’re not giving out any further information, as far as what details surround the shooting, or what led up to the shooting,” Lt. Fitzgerald said.

Police say it’s not clear if the two incidents are related, but an arson investigator is working the scene. Narcotics officers were also on hand, but police won’t confirm if drugs are a factor in either case.

Police say no arrests have been made, and the people who live at the house are cooperating. More information, including the names of those involved, are expected to be released soon.
