Protecting children as they use social media

Medford, Ore. — Parents, community leaders, and people who work with children came together Monday night to talk about how to protect kids from becoming victims of crimes as they use social media.

The forum was put on by the Children’s Advocacy Center, and featured an FBI agent with the Southern Oregon High Tech Crimes Task Force. Executive Director Tammi Pitzen said it’s a daily task to keep up with the ever changing technology, but it’s crucial to keep your kids safe.

She said ultimately parents need to monitor what their child is doing not only on the computer, but on cell phones and tablets with social media apps.

“I think a huge thing that a parent can do, which is really simple, is to be present in their child’s life and to talk to them and to talk to them about what the dangers are,” Pitzen said.

Tuesday the Children’s Advocacy Center is holding a child abuse symposium called “Caught in the Web” about internet crimes against children. That will go on all day at the Inn at the Commons in Medford.
