Prowler call leads to fatal shooting in Grants Pass

Grants Pass, Ore –A late night 911 call of a prowler in Grants Pass, but before police could arrive shots are fired and one man is dead.

Neighbors in the area say every resident along West Park Street near the fairgrounds has been victimized in some way by trespassers. That may explain why today, 32-year-old Matthew J. Durbin is dead.

According to Grants Pass Police, officers responded to this home on the 900 block of West Park Street after reports of someone trying to break in around 10 pm Tuesday.

Before officers arrived reports came in of shots fired and 32-year year old Matthew Durbin was found dead at the scene.

The district attorney who is handling the investigation wasn’t available for comment and we don’t know yet why Durbin was at the residence.

Those who use the bike-path near West Park Street say at night the area can become a dangerous place.

“At night time it’s not as safe as everybody thinks it is, a lot of things here go on and you don’t want to be here when they happen,” said Brian Robinson.

Neighbors say there have been multiple break-ins along the small stretch of road.

They hope increased police patrols on the roads and along the bike paths will deter future crimes.

The investigation into Matthew Durbin’s death is ongoing.

At this time no charges have been filed.
