Eagle Point, Ore.– When it comes to protecting their kids,the Eagle Point School District Weapon’s SafetyCommittee ispreparing for the worst.
Wednesday night the public had the chance to give their input on how to make the district safer. One of the options talked about is arming teachers.
“I trust these people with my children every day everyday Monday through Friday. I turn them over to these guys in these schools.They do a phenomenal job I justdon’tknow if giving them a gun is the best way to do it,” saidparent, Joyce Adams.
The committee was formed nearly a year ago. Tasked with bringing school safety ideas to the Eagle Point school Board.
“It’s very clear that we weren’t talking about guns in the schools. We are talking about school safety,” said Allen Barber.
Barber is Director for Jackson County School District 9.He said the group is considering all options including security systemslike one newly installed at Shady Cove School.
“The Nexar system is the grand-daddy of all security systems with the microphones and cameras in all their rooms. They’ve come out with a panic button,” said Barber.
The security system has a $2,000,000 dollar price tag. And Barber said members of thecommitteeare doing their best to crunch the numbers and come up with the best plan, for the worst scenario.
Thecommitteewill meet again in three to four weeks where they hope to have a recommendation ready for the school board.
