Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

It has been 44 years since civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Today Americans remembered him for his stance on nonviolence and equality.

Here in Southern Oregon, over 800 people took to the streets of Ashland to honor him. The Historic Ashland Armory opened their doors at noon. Within minutes the theater was at full capacity.

Claudia Alick spent months working as an associate producer for the event. She explained to us what the holiday means to her.

“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day is a day for us to just say as a whole community lets not hate each other. Lets try and work together. Lets recognize that we are all in this together.”

After several performances and speeches the group marched to Lithia Plaza where they heard a recorded speech from King himself.

It was only in 2000 that all 50 states recogonized Martin Luther King Jr. Day as an official federal holiday.
