Residents evacuated from apartment complex after smoke seen

PHOENIX APT FIRE PICPhoenix, Ore. — Residents of a Phoenix Apartment complex were evacuated Sunday morning, after smoke was seen coming from an upstairs unit, prompting a large response from fire crews.

The call came in just after 11:30 AM, when a neighbor saw smoke venting out through the apartment. Fire crews from Phoenix and Medford responded to the 900-block of North Rose street, and quickly began evacuating residents in surrounding units.

“Law enforcement got on scene with us, helped evacuate the neighboring units, while our initial attack crew from the phoenix station went upstairs and found a room and contents fire,” Darin Welburn said, Fire Chief of Jackson County Fire District Five.

No one was inside the apartment at the time, and no one was injured, however a cat inside the unit didn’t make it out. Crews say a small fire had started, and they were able to put it out quickly. The cause is not yet known.
