(NBC News) There’s reason to believe the problem of distracted drivers around school zones and school buses is getting worse.
“In 2013, two million more drivers passed school bus stop arms than they did in 2011,” says Charles Territo of American Traffic Solutions. “There is no question that distracted driving plays a role.”
Much of that information’s coming from school bus drivers and backed up by on-board video.
“There are more than a hundred children killed and more than 25,000 injured every year,” Territo points out.
American Traffic Solutions sets up cameras on buses and in school zones to catch violators, and that’s helping, but school and safety officials across the country are still searching for anything to help reduce distracted driving everywhere, especially around schools.
