Medford, Ore. — The Oregon Department of Justice has dropped an investigation into Jackson County Sheriff candidate Bob Sergi, saying there is insufficient evidence to move forward.
Sergi was accused of using addresses from an employee’s roster to solicit campaign funds, a charge he’s denied from the beginning.
Sergi was put on administrative leave by the sheriff’s office during the investigation. He’s challenging his boss, Sheriff Mike Winters, as well as Ashland Deputy Chief Corey Falls in the race for Jackson County Sheriff.
in a formal letter written to the sheriff’s office this week, the Oregon Department of Justice says there is insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Lt. Sergi committed official misconduct, computer crime or theft in the third degree.
Sergi doesn’t believe the investigation will hurt his campaign since he was cleared of the charges.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s office released a statement Thursday afternoon saying that Sergi will remain on administrative leave despite being cleared by O.D.O.J., and they declined further comment.
NBC 5 News broke the news to Sergi who said he hadn’t heard from the department and did not want to comment any further.
