Tualatin, Ore. — (KGW) Heavy steel beams tore through a truck and nearly hit the driver Wednesday afternoon.

All the police officers said I need to buy them lottery tickets, said driver Jack Phillips. I was very fortunate, very fortunate today.

It’s an accident you have to see to believe. Phillips was driving an 18-wheeler when another trucker cut him off, taking off his left front fender and rear view mirror.

If only that was the worst of it. Phillips was then forced to slam on the brakes, causing 30-thousand pounds of steel to shift on his trailer. Phillips said he didn’t know what to do but duck his head and hope for the best.

Steel beams came barreling into the back of the cab.

It went right by my head, right past it, yeah, inches past my head…I was very lucky. If you look in the cab, the only thing that’s not crumbled is my seat and steering wheel. The dashboard is gone, everything’s gone. I was very lucky, said Phillips.

Tualatin Police officer John Vande Brake says, It’s absolutely amazing he came out unscathed, absolutely amazing.
