Students organize run to raise money for suicide prevention

Medford, Ore. —  A group of Washington Elementary students involved in Community 101 are organizing a fun run to raise money for suicide awareness and prevention.

Community 101 is a classroom-based program that gives students the opportunity to get involved in their communities through grant making and volunteering. The group recently received a $5,000 grant to donate to any organization of their choice.

Members of the group sent out a survey to the students in their elementary school. The results showed the students were concerned about poverty, substance abuse, and suicide.

In addition to donating the money the students are hoping to bring people together to encourage those who have been bullied to never give up hope.

“You’re never alone. There’s always going to be somebody there for you, you’ll always have a friend no matter what,” sixth grader Ruby Cabrera said.

The three-mile run begins Saturday April 2nd at 9:00 a.m. at Bear Creek Park. The cost is $5 for anyone who’s not a student or a family member of a student.
