Teen alerts Central Point apartment residents of fire

Central Point, Ore. — Fire crews responded to the 1200 block of Cherry street in Central Point, for a reported air conditioning unit that had caught on fire. Once on scene, fire crews learned that most residents had already been evacuated out the building by teenager Tristan Cobb.

“I went and knocked on three, two, and number one, and I got my dog out of the house,” Cobb said.

While walking home, Cobb said he saw the smoke and initially thought someone was barbecuing. However, after taking a second look, he realized the air conditioning unit was on fire. He said he walked up to the apartment and spoke with his friend inside, who had already called 911.

“So I walked over there, I was like, ‘Dude, is there anybody that’s in the houses above, is there anybody in the houses, have you gotten everybody out,'” Cobb said.

Cobb then began going door to door, checking for residents. Everyone was able to get out of the building, and no injuries were reported.

Jackson County Fire District Three, Medford Fire and Rescue, and Central Point Police responded to the fire. The exact cause is still under investigation.
