Tobacco and marijuana issues in Ashland

640x360_41230P00-WGCGTAshland, Ore. — The latest on two big issues discussed during Tuesday night’s Ashland City Council meeting: Firstly, a proposal to ban public smoking in Ashland and secondly, a vote on the marijuana tax issue.

Despite counselors agreeing that cigarette smoking is unhealthy, they’re not ready to call for a vote to ban smoking just yet.

Council member Carol Voisin is concerned with smokers who litter the landscape with cigarette butts. She and others want the Chamber of Commerce to get input from businesses, tourists, students at SOU and smokers themselves. Voision passed a motion to that effect.

The City Council will take up the issue again and hopes to have more input by mid-April before voting on the ban.

On the marijuana issue, the Ashland City Council did vote to put the 3 percent marijuana tax on the ballot for the November general election. There will be a second reading later this month.
