Water rates in Medford could increase by 60% in 4 years

MEDFORD, ORE. —   Water rates may soon go up for Medford Water Commission customers by nearly 60 percent over the next 4 years. But the percentage isn’t as drastic as it seems.

The commission hasn’t had any major rate increases over the past couple of years. Part of the reason for the increase would help catching up to where the customers should be, while the other part would help expand and make changes to the treatment plant.

HDR, a Seattle based company evaluated the rates in Medford and found that the commission should be increasing their rates by an average of 12 percent every year for the next 4 years.

While it may seem high, rates in Medford are dramatically lower than the state average.

For example, the cost for 5,000 gallons currently in Medford during the summer months averages $11.05. Compare that to the state average of $26.15.

Meaning if approved every year, after 4 years, the rate in Medford would sit between 17 and 18 dollars.

“At the end of that 4 years, we still would be two-thirds of the rate charged today but other Oregon water utilities in the winter months, and about half of what’s charged in state during the summer months,” said Laura Hodnett, PIO for the Medford Water Commission.

Hodnett emphasizes the commission is going to do whatever they can to soften the increase.

The board will hold a public hearing to discuss the possible rate increase on October 21, and they will likely make a decision that night for next year.

As for increases in the future, the board will reevaluate the rate every year.
