Local schools to receive portion of $50 million seismic safety upgrade bond

Salem, Ore. – Local schools will be getting a cut of a $50 million bond sale that will finance seismic safety upgrades at Oregon schools and community colleges.

According to the Oregon State Treasury, the new bonds were issued last week as part of a $351.4 million total bond sale. Oregon’s strong credit rating helped the Treasury sell the 20-year bonds at competitive interest rates.

The Oregon Treasury said a 2007 review by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries listed more than 1,000 school structures at risk of collapse in a major earthquake in Oregon.

Oregon State Treasurer Ted Wheeler said, “Studies have found that schools are at risk, which means schoolchildren are at risk, and I applaud the Legislature for approving this use of our limited bonding capacity.”

The list of institutions that will be receiving more than $1 million include schools in Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, and Medford.
